On November 3 of the 52nd year of Cianlong (1787), the Emperor, pleased with local inhabitants’ contribution to protection of Jhuluo County, renamed “Jhuluo” “Chiayi,” which gave birth to the name Chiayi County we have today.
During the reign of Emperor Taoguang (1821－1850) Chiayi County was divided into 41 administrative regions under which there were villages.
Those whose terrains were all or mostly within the territory of Chiayi County (including Chiayi City) today were:
17 administrative regions including Chiayihsi administrative region (64 villages; Shuishang Township and Chiayi City today), Baishigongtan administrative region (33 villages), Chiayidong administrative region (146 villages; near Jhuci Township, Fanlu Township, Jhungpu Township, and Dapu Township today), Nioudiaohsi administrative region (19 villages)、Damugun administrative region (76 villages), Tsaitougang administrative region (39 villages), Damaodong administrative region (66 villages; near Dalin Town, Meishan Township and Yunlin County Gukeng Township today), Damaodonghsia administrative region (50 villages; near Dalin Town, Minhsiung Township and Jhuci Township today), Damaohsi administrative region (18 villages), Dakanglangdong administrative region (12 villages), Dakanglanghsi administrative region (51 villages), Damaonan administrative region (65 villages), Niaosong administrative region (8 villages; new Dongshi Township, Yunlin County Shuilin Township today), Damaobei administrative region (15 villages), Daciutianhsi administrative region (60 villages), Lutzetsao administrative region (19 villages), Longjiaotan administrative region (30 villages). Those whose terrains were partially within the territory of Chiayi County included Hsiajiadongbei administrative region (54 villages) and Hsiajiadongnan administrative region (42 villages).
During the reign of Emperor Tungjhi (1862－1874) Chiayi County was divided into 36 administrative regions and 936 villages.
The number of those whose terrains were all or mostly within the territory of Chiayi County (including Chiayi City) today was 15. Changes in the name and number of districts of the administrative regions and towns were as follows:
Chiayidong administrative region (40 villages), Damugun administrative region (39 villages), Damaodongshan administrative region (36 villages), Damaodonghsia administrative region (31 villages), Baishigongtan administrative region (44 villages), Chiayihsi administrative region (32 villages), Lutzetsao administrative region (13 villages), Longjiaotan administrative region (22 villages), Tsaitougang administrative region (35 villages), Dakanglang administrative region (15 villages)、Damaohsi administrative region (17 villages)、Damaobei administrative region (24 villages), Damaonan administrative region (39 villages), Daciutianhsi administrative region (22 villages)。
Those whose terrains were partially within the territory of Chiayi County included: Hsiajiadongnan administrative region (28 villages) and Hsiajiadongbei administrative region (38 villages).
In the first year of Emperor Guangshu (1875) Tsengwen Stream became the new demarcation between Chiayi County and Taiwan County. In the 14th year of Emperor Guangshu (1888) Yunlin County was added to the north of Chiayi County.
Those whose terrains were all or mostly within the territory of Chiayi County (including Chiayi City) today were: Chiayishou administrative region, Chiayidong administrative region, Damugun administrative region, Nioudiaohsi administrative region, Damaobei administrative region, Damaodongding administrative region, Damaodonghsia administrative region, Damaonan administrative region, Damaohsi administrative region, Baishigongtan administrative region, Longjiaotan administrative region, Lutzetsao administrative region, Daciutianhsi administrative region, Dakanglangdonghsia administrative region (near Taibao City and Lutsao Township today), Dakanglanghsi administrative region and Niaosong administrative region – all together 16 administrative regions. Those whose terrains were partially within the territory of Chiayi County included Hsiajiadongnan administrative region’s Nioudiaopu Village (Shuishang Township’s Nioudiaopu today), Fantzeliao Village (Shuishang Township’s Fantzeliao today) and Sanjiapu Village (Shuishang Township’s Sanjiapu today); and Hsiajiadongbei administrative region’s Sanjaotze Village (Lutsao Township’s Sanjaotze).
