During Japanese Occupation, there were many cultural activities going on in Chiay. Activities having to do with painting were particularly outstanding. Chiayi therefore had a reputation of being the City of Painting. Wu joined Chunmeng Painting Society in 1929 and has so far had his works on display at exhibitions held by the society 4 times. His works were exhibited in the 4th Taiwan Provincial Exhibition the following year and the 6th and 7th Taiwan Provincial Exhibition in 1932 and 1933. In 1940, his works were exhibited in Central Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition and were rated excellent. Following Taiwan Restoration, he began teaching at a high school and performed administrative duties concurrently. Because of his heavy workload, he spent little time painting for 20 years. He started spending more time painting in around 1961. He has been painting ever since even though he is well over 100.
Wu’s devotion to education and love for art makes it possible for him to continue to actively participate in local cultural activities in his retired life. His hometown has been able to nurture cultural activities because of his very existence.
