To comply with the Earth Day, Chiayi County Magistrate, Ming-wen Chen took lead to the ¡§Love the Earth Simply¡¨, and signed the ¡§15 rules to treasure our Earth¡¨ agreement to reduce the amount of meat consumption, ride bicycles, spend less, and urges the public to help prevent global warming.
Environmental Protection Bureau noted, the theme of this year¡¦s Earth day is ¡§Save Our Sky¡¨. The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) started a ¡§Lights and Elevator Off for an hour¡¨ event to comply with the Earth day. County owned institutes also followed to turn off lights and elevators during the lunch hour. ¡§Reduce Carbon, and protect our Earth¡¨ is no longer a slogan.
EPA pointed out, in the last century, the temperature rose 0.6 degrees Celsius. In Taiwan, the average temperature raised 1.1 degrees Celsius, which has the doubled the amount of the increase rate when comparing with the rest of the world. Taiwan not only did not reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emission, the growth rate reached 110%, making itself the highest amount of emission among other countries. Each person¡¦s pollution reached 11.25 tons of pollution, making itself the 4th rank among the world. Therefore, Taiwanese should be more of a contribution to this matter.
Magistrate Ming-wen Chen led the director-general of the Environmental Protection Bureau Rong-he Lin to ride bicycles to the center of the county government, and signed the ¡§15 rules to treasure our Earth¡¨ agreement, and followed actively by the employees of the county government.
Ming-wen Chen urged everyone to cycle more to nearby institutes such as the county assembly and the Chiayi county Human Resources Development Center. Reduce the amount of driving will reduce the amount of pollution from cars. Employees should also make use of public transportation, shared rides, walk and ride bicycles.
Besides transportation, power saving is also important. Ming-wen Chen emphasized, switching to the energy-saving light bulbs can help reducing the amount usage. Furthermore, although Chiayi County does not yet carried out car idling impunity, but he urged the drivers to stop cars when idle when over three minutes.
Ming-wen Chen noted, protecting the environment could be very easy by starting from our daily life. Unplug, turn off lights, save water, treasure papers, buy recycled products, use environmental-friendly dinnerware, cook as much as you eat and etc.. are all great methods to save our earth and protect the environment.
